The soul is trapped in the human body. Why would I say this? The soul is perpetually tired experiences the ravages of the material world where as the human body thrives on it. Here, steps in the concept of consciousness. The evolution of a person's soul enables them to separate the human body and the soul when the constant battle drains them. Sleep is one of the major escape route. When the body is asleep, the soul separates itself from the body to return to stabilizing and calming the etheric body. In the state of sleep, the body shuts down the ability to experience and rejuvenate the energies. Here steps in the concept of conscious sleeping!! When the mental body is mentally awake but the physical body enters into a deep resting phase. Conscious sleeping allows the heavy energies to settle and allows the body to slip into deep relaxation.
I would like to deep dive into the layers of the bodies we all possess. As per Vedic traditions and Sanskrit scriptures,(Maya Chastain,healthline.com,2020),our body consists of 5 Koshas(sheaths) that allow one to deeply center oneself.
#1 Anomaya Kosha (the Food body) - Containing the physical body including the muscles, tissues, skin, hair and intestinal organs. Known as "the form aggregator". When the body is in sleep state, the conscious mind turns off and the body uses this time for physical repair, growth, muscle and tissue resting.
#2 Pranamaya Kosha (the Breath body)- This is the breath body that use gentle movement without exerting energy. There is movement during breathing throughout as long as we are alive. Breathing moves towards deep diaphragmatic breathing, when our mind, emotions and body are in different states. When being sleep mode, the breathing becomes slower and rhythmic for generating the vital energy.
#3 Manomaya Kosha(Emotional/mental body)- This aggregates feelings, perceptions and mental formations that can be pleasant, unpleasant or neutral thoughts. Our energy body has around 52 mental formations that are classified into Universal factors,Occasional factors,Beautiful factors,Unwholesome factors,Boundless state and Wisdom. All these latch onto our emotional body. When the mental body shuts down completely in deep sleep, the frantic thinking pauses and slips into dream state processing the day's events.
#4 Vijnamaya Kosha(Witness body)- This particular Kosha regulates the parasympathetic nervous system where the awareness of thoughts is high. Simply put, where the psychic body and seat of one's intuition is regulated. Viynamaya teaches the brain to detach from ego and sense of self, when the etheric body activates the intellect body to go offline, the ego and decision making faculties switch off the brain and goes into higher level of consciousness.
#5 Anandmaya Kosha (The Bliss body)- When the body reaches a state of calm and wholeness,it reaches the subtlest layer of one's being. It is known as the state of "Samadhi" as per Hindu Scriptures. The sense of self feels at a natural resting state beneath the fluctuations of the mind and the ego. Known to be the state of "the bliss body" as the consciousness reaches the purest state of rest where the soul is at the highest peaceful state. There is no level of processing of the mind here.
Without adequate sleep, our connection to our etheric body and spiritual self starts to weaken. Why would I vouch for this? That is because the subtle body gets deprived of restorative rest that is required to absorb The Prana to repair the energetic debris our bodies carry as "energy latch ons".
In esoteric scriptures, sleep allows the subtle bodies to astral travel to spiritual dimensions which are known to be the 4th,5th till the 12th dimensional state where the egoic mind processes past karmic experiences that connects to consciousness.
Karma begins to clear during sleep cycles as the emotional body processes the exit of karmic patterns to the the etheric body which further dissolves one the dream state of consciousness begins. The body, thus, starts to free heavy emotional energy and eliminates inner blocks.(Daishin McCabe,2011)
